Social Security

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is a federal agency that was created in 1937. In 1956 the SSA was amended to include disability insurance. The amendment only allowed severely disabled workers age 50 plus and adult children with disabilities of retired workers to receive benefits.  In 1960 the SSA was amended again to eliminate the age requirement. This amendment allowed young people to receive benefits based on their disability.  Medicaid and Medicare were created in 1965, and in 1967 SSA began providing benefits for widows/widowers 50 plus years of age.
