The Center For Disability Resources

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine – Department of Pediatrics

A statewide information and referral service that identifies service provider options for persons with disabilities and seniors.  Projects – preparing daycare staff to care for children with special needs, supporting consumer-directed attendant care services, working with parents of at-risk infants, and conducting best practice training for disability service providers state wide. An AT lab that loans equipment for trial use and provides consultations with school personnel and others across the state via teleconferencing. A pediatric clinic that provides comprehensive assessments for children experiencing developmental delay, a resource center that offers a centralized collection of books, tapes and instructional materials on a wide range of disability topics available on loan to professionals, and families.

Charles Webb Center Programs for Children

The Webb Center serves special needs children from Age 6 Weeks to 10 Years Old who have the services of an Early Interventionist or Service Coordinator. It is licensed by the SC Child Care Licensing Services and the Department of Health and Environmental Control. The SCDDSN provides full day funding for twenty children from age six weeks to three years old and partial day funding for seven DDSN certified children. Webb Center offers a full-time nurse on staff, USDA meals served daily, parent resources, experienced staff certified in Child CPR and first aid, ABC certified classroom teachers, a staff ratio of 1:5, collaboration with speech, occupational, physical therapists, early interventionists and service coordinators.

Children’s’ Rehabilitative Services

  • Nursing Services
    • Clinic nursing staff in each local health department and CRS clinic coordinate the program and assist families with special children to obtain the medical care and treatment services needed.
  • Genetics
    • Genetic services are provided through the CRS program. These services include screening, testing, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and counseling. CRS works closely with the three genetic centers in South Carolina. Genetic services are provided through the local health department.
  • Social Work
    • Social Work professionals help families work through financial problems, find help from other agencies, learn special parenting skills, and adjust to having children with special health care needs.
  • Nutrition
    • Nutrition services are provided through the CRS program. Registered dietitians are available to work with families to assist with feeding problems, growth delay, poor nutrition, slow weight gain, obesity, tube feeding, and special nutritional concerns related to different chronic diseases such as diabetes, spina bifida, or hypertension.
  • Transition
    • Transition is an integral part of the treatment plan. The child’s needs are addressed as they progress from birth, to adolescences, to adulthood. These progressions include early intervention, education, employment, and independent living.
  • Parent-to-Parent Support
    • Parent Resource Specialists provide parent to parent support, community information and resources to the CRS patient and their family. They are unique among CRS staff since each is the parent of a child with special health needs.

Developmental Pediatrics and Genetics – MUSC Children's Hospital

Evaluative and Diagnostic facility providing comprehensive evaluations for children suspected of developmental behavioral problems (learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, ADHD, mental retardation, communication disorders, autism, etc). MUSC-Childrens’ Services

IMPACT: Program for Preschoolers   |   STAR-Program for Adolescents

IMPACT offers both partial hospitalization and inpatient treatment to preschool-age children (Ages 3 to 6) with extremely disruptive behavior at home or in day care. Extensive work with family members and continued at-home follow-up and monitoring are important offering of this program.

STAR: Offers treatment to children and adolescents with serious behavioral and / or emotional difficulties in a structured and therapeutic environment. Children remain in the program throughout the day, receiving individual, family and group services.

Children with birth defects, including orthopedic disorders, whose families are unable to provide orthopedic care due to financial issues or medical complexity. There is a burn unit, as well, and “disorders”; may include spinal cord injuries and cleft palates. An application form must be completed first. American Red Cross Preparedness (Health and Safety Services)

A year-round program of training courses in Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Pet First Aid, Babysitting, Water Safety (including swimming lessons), HIV / AIDS Education, and Disease Transmission Prevention are available to the public colleges, and industries. Training courses meet OSHA and DHEC guidelines. Trainings are offered several times each month. Also, offers Professional level training courses with their CPR for the Professional Rescuer (comparable to the AHA Healthcare Provider Course) and Emergency Responder.

American Red Cross Response (Disaster Services)

Disaster Services provides immediate emergency assistance to house fire victims; shelter team members set up and operate shelters during storm evacuations and other disasters; caseworkers interview families affected by disasters and provide financial assistance and referrals for disaster relief only. These services are available 24/7.

Angel Food Ministries

Angel Food's groceries are sold at $25 per box. Monthly menus vary and has both fresh and frozen items with an retail value of approximately $70 per box. Also, Bonus Food Boxes are offered at additional cost. Angel Food Ministries accepts U.S. Food Stamps (EBT). A Salvation Tract that crosses denominational lines and spreads the good news of the gospel of Christ is placed in each food order. Food sales and distribution are handled by church host sites. Orders and payments are collected by the host church during the first part of each month (contact Church site for specific dates) and several days later food is delivered to the host church where individuals can pick up their order.

Catholic Charities – Basic Needs

Catholic Charities provides assistance depending on the availability of funds. Must have a bill that is past due but cannot help if electric is turned off. Clients call to make an appointment. Help with prescriptions may be available. Clients calling for help with a prescription are advised to leave their name and phone number and will be called back as soon as possible. Catholic Charities provides a weekly Life Skills class that offers help with Budgeting, Job Search, Stress Management and Parenting for their clients.

Crisis Ministries

  • Soup Kitchen: lunch seven days a week, Monday – Saturday: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm; Sunday: 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm for anyone who is hungry. They also have a Food pantry on-site.
  • Homeless Services: Men's shelter opens at 7:30 pm and Family Center for women and children is open 24 hours. Allows married parents to stay with their children. Both shelters provide evening and breakfast meals for residents. The City provides an on-site officer from 7:00 pm – 5:30 am. Every guest is assigned a case worker that helps form a plan to return to self-sufficiency with services that may include social work, mental health, medical clinic and substance abuse services.

Association for the Blind

The Living Well with Partial Vision program provides in-home services by occupational therapists who teach self-care and home-management skills to help patients live independently and safely in their home environments. Computer training is offered through collaboration with the SC Commission for the Blind. The courses are free of charge and offer instruction in JAWS and ZoomText, which are screen reading and magnification software designed for the blind and severely vision impaired. The Association also employs vision-impaired individuals who re-cane chairs for individuals who have need of that service in the community.

Lowcountry AIDS Services

  • Case Management: Lowcountry AIDS Services employs a professional staff that determines the extent of supportive services needed by each client and links the client with a strong network of community-based service providers.
  • Volunteer Program: They offer respect, compassion, and empowerment through practical and emotional assistance for clients and their families. Volunteers help by providing transportation to medical appointments and support groups; delivering groceries and supplements to clients. Emergency Repair Program

Program created to increase livability of substandard housing in North Charleston by assisting qualified residents. Eligible repairs include collapsing roofs, lack of running water, exposed electrical wiring or wiring that poses a fire hazard, flooring at risk of collapsing, verified gas leaks, hazardous water heaters, unsound porch floors and rails of certain size, large holes in exterior walls. Program also addresses handicap accessibility needs. Generally, cost of repairs is limited to $7,000.
